A pivotal role in the weekend supplement of The Independent. Working consistently with challenging budgets, my responsibilities included all aspects of sub-editing, active contribution to weekly editorial meetings and commissioning of features, crafting furniture copy, scheduling production slots, building and maintaining good relationships with regular contributors, managing copy traffic, re-writing copy, and final sign-off of proofs. Management of one full-time sub-editor and freelancers as necessary. Weekly duties extended to writing the “Pet of the Week” column, which I conceived and am still writing in a freelance capacity. In addition I also contributed to both the Travel and Food and Drink sections in the main newspaper.
While at The Independent, I was given the task, along with my art director, of stress-testing a new editing/content management system and overseeing its application to the magazine. This meant switching from Mac to PC overnight and acting as “Guinea pigs” in pioneering the Prestige CMS/Media Mogul interface which was subsequently rolled out through the entire newspaper and the sister paper, The Independent on Sunday.
